If you can have web sites dedicated to other subjects of interest, then why not one exclusively for gardening? Well, you have not just one, but many sites centering round this topic! A typical gardening site is like an online library that is open for 24 hours, 7 days a week! It also doubles as a shopping mall!

Now, what are all the things that one can expect to find on a gardening site?

(1) The basic function of a gardening site is to give guidance regarding successful growth of plants. These plants may be found in the tropics, the Mediterranean region, desert areas–just about anywhere. And they can be of all kinds! There is also information related to gardening materials and tools, seasons, weather conditions, and so much more. The web site may begin by offering basic information, but gradually expand to more advanced knowledge over time.

To illustrate with an example, an extremely popular and well-designed web site started off by giving access to gardening directories and tools. Today, it has an exlusive online shopping section offering mail order catalogs, gifts, gardening supplies and so on. Some of the other things on display are photographs related to gardens and gardening, a complete glossary, forums for sharing views and a section where experts answer questions put forward by visitors.

(4) Depending on how many people visit a particular gardening site, the more information that is added on and the more varied the resources offered. Thus, the web site grows in depth!

(5) True, some sites are interested only in one particular type of flower or plant; but there are others that focus on a variety ranging from world-class roses that have gone up for awards, to the rare and exotic orchids.

(6) A gardening site can also turn personal by allowing visitors to sign up and become members. Novices and experts can interact with one another, asking for, and receiving information concerning gardening. It is like a two-way feedback system!

Blogging is also a pastime on these sites. Interested participants share information regarding type of seeds sown, time of sowing, brand of fertilizer used, how many times, etc. Pictures of various plants are also displayed. These may have been grown successfully, or may have failed to grow properly. In fact, personal blogs have become such a craze, benefitting both beginners and veterans alike, that they are expected to grow in number during the coming years.

(7) There is another kind of gardening site called the “gardening blog”, also known as “web log”. This represents an online journal concentrating on gardening. Members maintain their gardening records on such a site. This enhances their learning and enjoyment!

(8) If a gardening site attains popularity among the general public, it encourages a sense of camaraderie and community feeling. Hence, newcomers to the site as well as older members feel inspired to participate in various ways.
