Buy Domain Name Outright

Online Brand Management- Brand Protection Basics

One of the greatest strengths of the Web is that it gives everyone with a connection the ability to publish content, period. Anyone can register domain names and build attendant webpages, often for what amounts to a pittance. Some domains cost as little as ten dollars to register, or less if the buyer wishes to bundle the purchase of several names at once. Naturally, this flexibility has attracted the attention of people with less than honest motives for their efforts.

Like it or not, there are individuals online who aren’t content to promote their brand through their own efforts and hard work, but would prefer to profit by the work of others. They accomplish this through a number of unfortunate methods. They domain-squat on names they expect to become famous, use similar names and domains to get attention, and in general rely on the good name of brands they have nothing to do with to draw in business.

As part of the effort to build up a brand into something to be proud of, it’s important to focus on brand protection. It may sound silly on the surface; after all, who could be confused by Makdonolds as opposed to McDonalds? However the issue isn’t always quite so ridiculously clear, and can lead to a number of hassles a brand just doesn’t need. Here we share three common hazards and their solutions for safeguarding your brand.

Hazard 1 – Cybersquatting

In short, cybersquatting is a series of methods for registering and maintaining a domain name solely with the intent to profit from another agency that desires it.

The first method revolves around predicting the need for the domain name itself. As in the above example, suppose in the early days of the Internet someone outside McDonald’s had registered all the relevant domain names. When McDonald’s finally goes to establish a Web presence, they find the names they need are all taken, and thus have to bargain with this individual for terms under which he’ll sell them back, obviously at a profit to himself.

Other methods involve registering similar domain names to existent ones. Suppose again that McDonald’s had possession of McDonald’s(dot)com, but not McDonald’s(dot)net. The squatter picks up the (dot)net domain, knowing that at least some people will come to the page out of curiosity or by accident. Once again, they can bargain with McDonald’s over ownership, or they can provide a link to McDonald’s own webpage, and thus get click-through traffic that can be monetized with ad revenue.

Solutions to Cybersquatting

Due to the fight over free speech and free market rights pertaining to the Web, cybersquatting is not easy to define as illegal. It is certainly unethical, but given the myriad of international laws governing the use of these domain names there is not always a clear recourse in overcoming these activities.

There are always methods that can be used, however. First, there is the legal recourse of going through ICANN for arbitration. However courts can and often have overturned ICANN’s rulings upon further review. The legal fees associated with this process may exceed the cost of simply buying the domain outright from the squatters.

Another option is to be creative with your domain names. Google, Yahoo, icanhascheezburger, and similar domain names share a certain nonsense quality. They aren’t commonly used words, and are less likely to get snapped up by squatters. If your business isn’t tied strongly to a real world word already, consider coming up with something outside the box to prevent yourself from getting squatted. Purchase several of the more common variations on your domain name as well, to prevent the parallel name style of squatting.

Hazard 2 – Typo Squatting

Typo squatting relies on common typing errors or shortcuts to redirect users to a site other than the one they intended to visit. For example, information(dot)com could be typed as iformation(dot)com or info(dot)com, and lead to the squatting site instead of the intended location. While this may seem like a variant on cybersquatting, it ends up being rather different in practice.

As with parallel naming, the intent here is to use a similar name to draw in users looking for one site. However the intent is very rarely to sell the url to the parent company. More frequently, these sites direct to ‘gripe’ pages, spambots, malware propagators and other malicious activities.

Solutions to Typo Squatting

Once again, legal action can be taken to protect a brand (particularly if the squatters are profiting from the venture), but can quickly become expensive. A more cost-effective route for a smaller brand just getting started would be to post information to your Social Media News Room and webpage about any such sites you come across, with warnings and information on how to circumvent them. Taking responsibility for your brand is the best way to protect it and cement its value in your audience’s mind.

Hazard 3 – Complacency

It’s tempting to register a domain name and trademark, and think that’s all you need to do. However, neither of these confers automatic protection. Yes, they allow for recourse to the law in the event a case goes to court, but the Internet is a place where information moves quickly. By the time you fight things out in a court case that you may or may not actually win, people already have associated your brand with the spambot they accidentally got directed to.

Solutions to Complacency

Be proactive. Education is your best defense on the Web. Learn about common cybersquatting and typosquatting tactics. Check your domain and see if others are using these tricks to hurt your brand (consciously or inadvertently). Be aware, be informed, and take every step you can. The Internet is a dynamic place, and it falls to you to make sure that benefits you, rather than blemishes your brand.

Domain Name Expiration Search

June 30th, 2009 admin No comments

How to Choose a URL by Conducting a Domain Name Ownership Search

A successful web site or blog is always made meaningful by its domain name. The web address that you choose must suit the theme and tenor of the web site or blog. Make sure that your name matches the subject of the web site or blog. Almost all well-known web portals have a domain name that is short, easy to remember and type into the address window of the browser. You should understand the system by which a domain works and performs. An effective name is always catchy with a definite theme and subject. Your visitors will feel that the domain name of your web site is quite powerful as it can evoke very strong connections with something that is special to the web user.

As far as possible, use main keywords that connect to the theme and topic of your web portal. You may wish to avoid hyphens and underscores as they can confuse and mislead your site visitors. Complicated web domains are those that are very difficult to type and remember. Extra symbols and strange characters can put off web users.

Choosing a very meaningful and practical domain name is actually very simple and straightforward. You need to sit down and think over all possible combinations of good keywords and their phrases. If you want to choose a good name, you can start with a comprehensive list of prospective names and shortlist the best ones among them. When you create a list of good names, the next step is to check whether they are available for registration. To conduct this important search, you will need to use an online tool that tells you about the availability of names.

Domain ownership identification tool is a very simple utility where you will find out who is the owner of the domain is and whether the name of your choice is available or not. This tool provides you the complete details of domain ownership including the date of expiry. Choosing a domain name is a trial and error exercise most of the good domains are already in use and you may need to work hard to create a good name. Domain name tools provide you a number of alternatives when the name of your choice is not available. You can pick the one from the list that best represents your theme and business idea.

If there is a domain name available for purchase, you can pounce on it and buy before someone does it. Domain name industry is a highly competitive industry and you never know when someone is going to buy your domain name ideas. While searching for a domain name think of all possible keyword phrases and wordings because most web users have their way of choosing products or services. Keywords play an important role while searching for domains by using domain name ownership online tool. If you do not find the domain name of your choice, you can always sift through the alternative list to choose the best one. Most of the online tools are efficient in providing a listing of most probable choices that eventually allow you to find a domain name that best represents your business theme, topic, style and tenor. Another emerging trend is to Buy Expired Domain Names from registrars. You will need to be very careful while buying an expired domain because the name that you wish to buy may have a shady past. However, expired domain market is a very good place to find those domain names that are not available in the fresh domain name market.

The general rule of thumb is to buy a domain name immediately when it is available in a domain ownership tool. It is always better to buy the domain name of your choice even if you are not creating your web site right now. Never ever, allow someone to buy your domain name. You may regret your decision of not buying your domain name when it was available.

I welcome the guest with utmost delight; For i know i will get respite. An air of happiness fills the space; My home now seems, a better place! Have you any clue who this visitor could be? Yes! It’s Ramadan, the month of mercy. The pious and righteous can’t await its arrival… For Allah we fast from dawn to dusk; For Him our breath is the fragrance of musk. Muslims who pray and fast with zest; Are aware of the rewards of this month manifest. Throughout this month we weep and repent; Now is the time to strongly lament. And those who shun this sacred month; On the Day of Reckoning will face the brunt. In the last ten nights, hides the Night of Decree; Allah then awaits for his slaves to plea. The angels descend with Gabriel in the lead; To check on the steadfast and record every deed. A feeling of grief now fills my heart; As the month of Ramadan will soon depart. With equal passion I have sought knowledge. I have wished to understand the hearts of (people). I long to alleviate the evil, but i cannot, And i too suffer. This has been my life; i found it worth living.”

In that realm there has always been wealth in abundance, and everything else has lost importance by comparison.”
o CARL SAGAN –”An elegant representation of the creation of the universe at the beginning of each cosmic cycle is the cosmic dance of Shiva as Nataraja, the Dance King. In the upper right hand is a drum whose sound is the sound of creation. Blog Giveaways

Promotional Tips for a Successful Blog Giveaway

Are you thinking of hosting a blog giveaway, but don’t know how to perform one? To start decide on what your prize will be. Make sure your prize will appeal to your readers as well as peak the interest of new readers to follow your blog. Offer prizes that relate to your blog; a blog geared towards new moms promoting a blog giveaway for fishing rods makes no sense.

What are your giveaway goals?
Decide on goals you want to achieve as a result of a blog giveaway. Do you want to increase traffic, gain more subscribers or promote a new blog?

Create copy and graphics
Write out a blog post to include giveaway rules. Keep blog giveaway rules simple and entry time short, no more than seven days to retain interest. Also create posts for Twitwall, which will automatically feed into your Twitter account. You can schedule retweets from Twitwall at 3, 6 and 8 hour intervals. Xomba.com is a useful site to post a blurb about your giveaway, because it will instantly provide a high Google ranking link within your niche. The graphic for your prize should be clear and appealing, so that participants can see exactly what they may win. Blurry and distorted images should be avoided.

Post your blog giveaway on other sites
Submit your blog giveaway to sites such as Online Sweepstakes, Contestblogger, Contest for Moms and Mom Giveaways. Also seek out blogs that are devoted to solely posting giveaways and contests.

Seeing is believing
Sign up with Random.org to help you select a winner. Random offers various views of  contest results. For example, entrant accessible enables giveaway participants to view and verify their entry as well as the winner. With so many scams on the Internet, this helps to give you more credibility.

Always say, “Thank you”
Lastly of course, thank everyone for entering and follow-up with your winner for mailing information.

Setting up your business on the Internet can be a lucrative way to attract customers, expand your market and increase sales. However, it is your duty to check and learn the rules and regulations, areas of privacy, security, copyright, and taxation that come with doing business on line.

Webmasters who are now on the web work overtime, researching, and building trust, which enables them to sell on the Internet.

They know success does not come overnight. They have to work hard, be persistent, teachable, research.  They have to make the effort and a little bit of cash helps.

If you intend on making a living on the Internet start out part time. The failing rate on the Internet is over 94 percent, mostly because they buy into the MLM Marketer that promises all you have to do is join as a paid member.

E-BAY

You should also consider selling via eBay. Thousands of persons are making a good living today selling on eBay. They give you a lot of support with free information, tools and resources. Really a great way to start on the Internet part-time, as you have control on the hours you want to spend to make it work.

What I like about eBay is you can start by selling articles, products you have around your home, which you no longer have use for. The products you sell do not have to be new, but should be in good condition

Protect yourself from spoof (fake) emails and Web sites. Take the Spoof Tutorial to learn about eBay Toolbar with Account Guard, which warns you when you are on a known spoof site.

For more safe buying tips, please visit the e-bay Safety Centre

INTERNET INFORMATION

PUBLIC DOMAIN

Many persons make a living by selling books, information that are in the Public Domain.

There are many books, movies, newspapers that are in Public Domain.  These are no longer cover by copyright and can be used by anyone, fully, or changed to suit the new author.

For example every issue of any magazine, who’s copyright was not renewed in the U.S.A. between the years of 1923 and 1964 becomes Public Domain. Records show only about 1,500 ever renewed their copyrights.  Every issue of any magazine whose copyright was not renewed in the 28th year of first publication is now Public Domain.

It may be noted that in the U.S.A. I believe all newsletters, information flyers, plus other material produced by the Government can be copied. In Canada Government works are copyright by the Government and can’t be copied.

SCAMS

The Internet is growing in sophistication, from two dozen nations taking an “aggressive interest” in stealing our secrets to new virtual gangs pooling their talents to launch coordinated attacks and crimes.

There are partnerships that are emerging—often globally—to turn back the rising tide of cyber crime. One of our partners is the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which has declared October its fifth annual National Cyber Security Awareness Month to help “educate the public on the shared responsibility of protecting cyberspace.”

You can make a difference—and help protect your own systems at home and at the office—by taking these basic steps:

Change your security passwords regularly, have a firewall in place on your computer, get the latest anti-virus software, and install current security patches for your computer’s operating system.

Also, take time to visit the FBI page to learn more about how our cyber action teams, computer crimes task forces, Innocent Images program, and Internet Crime Complaint Center are playing vital roles in protecting cyberspace.

Can you avoid getting caught by a scam artist working the web? Not always. But prudence pays. The FTC offers these tips to help you avoid getting caught by an offer that just may not click:

Read the fine print and all relevant links. Fraudulent promoters sometimes bury the disclosures they’re not anxious to share by putting them in teeny-tiny type or in a place where you’re unlikely see them.

Look for a privacy policy. If you don’t see one – or if you can’t understand it – consider taking your business elsewhere

Be sceptical of any company that doesn’t clearly state its name, street address and telephone number. Check it out with the local Better Business Bureau, consumer protection office or state Attorney General. The FTC works for the consumer to prevent fraudulent, deceptive, and unfair business practices.  The FTC enters consumer complaints into the Consumer Sentinel Network, a secure online database and investigative tool used by hundreds of civil and criminal law enforcement agencies in the U.S. and abroad.

PayPal works hard to prevent identity theft from happening on their site. PayPal offers educational tools geared to teaching users about security theft, including free Equifax credit alerts and a new PayPal Security code key. You can also go to my website where you will find over 3 years of Internet information in my archives.

PHISHING

Phishing still catches millions of persons who give out their personal information, believing the e-mail they received was from a bank, PayPal, taxation branch, or some other Government Department. Further, instead of typing in the URL supplied by the phisher they just clink on it.  Just because the URL has the proper heading doesn’t mean it is going to a legit URL. In phishing they have it redirected if you click on the URL and they get your personal information.

Further, consumers should not release personal information in response to unsolicited telephone calls. Providing your PII will compromise your identity!

LIGHTSIDE

Throw In The Towel

The middle-aged boxer entered the ring for his daily practice. Both of his ears were bandaged.

His coach asked him what happened.

He explained, “I was ironing my shirt when the phone rang and I accidentally answered the phone with the iron!”

“That explains the one ear, what happened to the other?” Asked the coach.

The boxer replied, “They phoned back”.

DROP SHIPPERS
You can get products to sell via eBay or/and your website by using
the services of a drop shipper. A reliable drop shipper will not ask
you for a fee. They will allow you to copy pictures of the products
they sell.  Prices are about half you would pay for retail.

If you have a website they will allow you to move any listing on
their site to yours.  You set your price on the product/s you
transfer.  When an order comes in place the order, they will ship
it out for you under your shipping label and not include any of
their material.

A good way to promote is join as an affiliate,(with a drop shipper),  transfer a couple specials onto your site, with a link back to your affiliate page.The cost of setting up a web site is minimum.

Subscribe to a few free Internet Newsletters, and join some free forums. You will find these listed in Google or Yahoo search.

Forums are a great way to contribute ideas and post.  Include your signature file at bottom.  Great way to makes sales too.

Blog Hosting Plans

June 30th, 2009 admin No comments

How to Find an Appropriate Blog Hosting

Blogging is something quite popular in the current world. People write blogs for either personal interests or business reasons. And considering the important of a reliable hosting to the success of your blog, it’s worthwhile to take some time to find out what hosting is the best for it.

Server Type

The most popular and powerful Blog Software is WordPress, an open source application developed by php and running against MySQL database. So, from technical viewpoint, Linux web hosting solution is the best choice for your blog, and it’s relatively cheaper than a Windows one as well.

When choosing your hosting solution, please make sure it supports php and MySQL.

Disk Space

Blog software itself won’t use a lot of space (less than 10MB for WordPress). And most of the disk space are used for the post you have written, and the image or video used by your blog. Let’s plan for 2 year first, think about how many posts you can write per day, and the average size of them. After it, you can make a calculation to know the disk spaces you will need.

And a good practice in blogging is to upload video to YouTube.com and image to Flickr.com, then put a URL in the blog to display the video and images to your readers. By this way, the required disk space will be decreased significantly.

Considering most of the shared web hosting company will give you huge disk space (more than 1000GB), it’s not something you need to worry about.

Monthly Transfer

Monthly transfer (sometimes loosely referred to as “traffic” or “bandwidth”) is the amount of bytes transferred from your site to visitors when they browse your site. If you go over the limit, then either you will have to be charged with an extra fee, or your website will not be available. The amount of bandwidth you use is obviously related to the amount of traffic (visitors) that you receive.

There are web hosting companies that offer Unlimited bandwidth. This sounds like a good deal. But bandwidth is a commodity that costs the web hosting company money – unlimited bandwidth is really impossible. So, some web hosting companies set a limitation to the CPU or memory your site can use per second, once it exceeds this number, your website will be temporarily unavailable. By this method, they can restrict the usage of bandwidth since more bandwidth usually means more CPU resource or memory resource.

Unlimited bandwidth feature is very common in the industry, so you can just enjoy it, but do put an eye on the stable of your site at the same time. If you get too much traffic and the site become unavailable, you should start thinking about upgrade your plan to an even powerful one (VPS or dedicated server). And a shared web hosting solution should work very well when you have less than 1000 unique IP/day (this is not a small number, your blog has to be within Alexa 100, 000 to reach it).

Reliability and Connection Speed

Reliability and connection speed are something you won’t know until you use their service. And this is too late.

So, you should only select the hosting companies which can guarantee its up time. Look for a minimum of 99.9%. Beside this, try to only select the hosting companies having money back guarantee policy, by which your money can be refunded if you are not satisfied with their service.

Support

There are 4 types of web hosting support, and almost all the web hosting companies will provide you with email support system, and online knowledge base. But we highly recommend you to sign up a hosting company with Online Live Chat support, by which you can get the support very quickly and explain your issues clearly. In most case, your issue will be resolved very soon.

Some companies will even provide 24*7 technical support, this is very nice as well.

Price

Price is always a factor, you should realize that you often get what you pay for, although it’s not necessarily true that the most expensive hosts are the best. A stable, fast, and 24*7 support server is more important than money.

Most web hosts allow you to select an annual or 2 years payment plan that gives you a cheaper rate than if you were to pay monthly. You might be worried about if you are not satisfied with the plan you purchase, what can you do. You need to check that whether the company provide the money back period so that you can request a refund if necessary.

Once you have made the decision on what hosting plan you plan to purchase, you can further look for some coupon code via Google to get some additional discount.

Blog Pinger Pro

June 30th, 2009 admin No comments

The SEO Pro’s To Ping Your Way To Internet Backlinks

Here’s a technique that works great on blogs hosted on either the Blogger or WordPress platforms. Not only are they free but Google seems to love these blogs which in turn means that all of your blog posts will rank on the first pages of Google!

Not everyone does but you can also host your blog using your own domain. You’d want to do this if you’re starting any type of e-commerce site or are planning to use it for self-promotion.

Ok, before you start just realize that you will only receive little traffic towards each blog post WHEN YOU START OUT. Using the strategy outlined below this will grow with each additional post you add to the blog. It is a quick way to get a lot of traffic to your site over time so don’t be discouraged if the first couple of posts don’t bring in thousands of visitors.

Step one is to research keywords that have less than one million results. Remember with this strategy all you are going to do is post content on your blog, not getting backlinks towards each blog post.

What you are trying to do is to get backlinks that drive traffic to your blog homepage. The more the better although there is no need to start doing link building on your other pages until you’re in the SERPS.

So the keywords you choose must have less than a million competitors, the lower the number the better. These keywords probably have little traffic, but regardless, if they only get ten a day it will be enough to start showing up in the search engines.

Pick a keyword and construct a title for your blog post trying to use that same keyword in the sentance. For example, If the keyword you choose is ‘fancy pants’, then you make a attention grabbing title like (for example): ‘fancy pants on parade,’ or ‘Celebrity fancy pants,’ or even my personal favorite ‘Trend of the week – fancy pants.’ Next create a five hundred to six hundred word blog post. You need to make the blog post decent by provide some value to your visitors. Never lose sight of the fact that your goal is to make money as well. Lookup information at the library on your keyword for help with what would work as “quality content.” Other tactics that work include writing spoofs on popular topics or engaging in America’s favorite past-time, talking about celebrities. AdSense and other types of on-page advertising works great with this content!

Don’t forget when creating the heading to the blog post do not change the keywords, or mix them. Keep the words in the keyword in oder that you previously determined. Next you can put the title before you begin the post and at the end of the post. To draw the readers attention put the title in either bold or have it underlined.

Publish your post and make sure to ping each time you do. There are numerous of different sources that you can use to do this but I’ve had the best success with a free one called Ping Ninja. A lot of these types of ping services take forever, require you to sign-up or don’t actually work (even though they claim to) but this one has never failed to get me traffic! They claim to be the fastest blog pinger on the internet. I don’t know if that’s true or not but it only takes about 5 seconds for it to ping all of my sites. This last step is the way to get traffic and rank because by pinging you will notify websites like Google and Yahoo to come and index your site. After you have a few posts you can then ping the link to your RSS feed (provided by Blogspot and WordPress for free on each page) which will help your ranking in the search engines and have more and more sites link to the article from their sites. It’s a safe bet to not post more than a few times a day, so it is smooth and search engines have a chance to index the page. Make also sure that on your langing page you have a section called previous posts, that lists all your previous posts. This is so that the posts to get indexed.

You need to have some pagerank on your blog so this tactic will work within minutes. So if you have a empty new blog, you need to optimize it first by getting other sites to link to it.

To get your site some authority, you can do blog link exchanges, submit your rss field to rss directories, submit your blog to blog directories or if you are a good writer, you can become an author of another blog. Then you post great articles on whatever blog/site being sure to link back to your own blog.

There are many more methods to get traffic to your blog, meaning those that work for your website will also be sucessful on your blog, like link exchanges or forum posting.

Remember the most important thing is to make the necessary keyword research, make usefull blog posts and get your blog interior pages some authority rank. You can find great keywords which get a ton of traffic and have a low number of competing sites, something does happen on occasion. They are called hidden keywords, which you are lucky enough to find if you take the time to do the keyword research often.

Here’s the method in a nutshell:
1. Begin a free blog on WordPress or Blogspot
2. Research keywords that don’t have more than one results in Google
3. Create a blog post on that topic using the keyword in the title
4. Ping your blog when finished, later run it again on the link to your RSS feed.
5. Watch the traffic start to grow with each new post. Repeat.

Internet Web Hosting

June 30th, 2009 admin No comments

Basic Concepts of Web Hosts

The one who wants to enter in this web world and desires for a long time survival, then he/she should be familiar with each and every terminology used in this field. If user considers all the important factors before choosing a hosting plan then only he/she will be able to have a successful future in this world .User should not choose any of the plan, rather he/she should opt the best and most suitable one and this can only be made possible by fetching more and more informations and also by studying properly all the requirements. New comers should start from the basics .They should learn the meaning of each and every term used and also in addition those factors that can affect his/her selection.

Web Host

Web host refers to a computer connected to the internet. Web host can also be termed as ‘web server’. The computer that is playing the role of the web server needs to be more powerful than normal PCs and the function of this web server is to serve up websites.

The website content of the user will remain will on this computer, so as the people who are surfing on the internet can get a way to access his/her website.

There can be three main categories in which the web host can be classified based on the economic factor and common features:

1. Free Hosts:

The users who are not professional but are making website only as a hobby then for them free hosting can be a good option. In free hosting space, bandwidth and other features provided are very limited. With free web hosting one can not only make his/her website successful but is also suitable for personal websites or for temporary usage. Generally free hosting enforces pop-up, text or banner ads. Reliability, best performance and customer support lacks in case of free hosting as well. When a user registers for a free host then the word free host gets added with the user’s domain name that gives an adverse effect in the eye of the visitors.

2. Shared Hosts:

The next type of the web hosting to be discussed is shared hosting. This hosting service is used by many of the web sites .This type of hosting service is Suitable for personal, small and medium businesses. This service can be used by paying $1 to $25 per month. The features provided by this service vary from very limited space/bandwidth to semi-dedicated servers. The users host their website by this type of hosting service and it has its own top level domain facility. No doubt that shared web hosting is quite better than free hosting but still it does not provide 100% satisfactory services. In case of shared hosting one server is shared by the number of websites so its performance and availability gets affected. More websites usually means less performance. If less number of websites are hosted by one server then it will be more expensive, but in this case there are more chances of reliability. There are many companies allowing customers to host multiple websites with different domains under a single account.

3. Dedicated Hosts:

The next type of hosting is dedicated hosting. This type of hosting is most reliable hosting. In this type of hosting a full server is dedicated to a single customer. Generally this type of hosting is used by large businesses, professionals and very active websites dealing with thousands of visitors daily. The customers having dedicated hosting can have their total control over the server as well as able to create as many websites as they like. Customers can run their own hosting company on a rented dedicated server. Payment module is mentioned according to specifications and services provided with the server, which varies from $100 up to about $800 dollars per month.

4. Collocated Hosts:

Now the other type of hosting service to be discussed is collocated hosting. This service is very much similar to dedicated hosting. The difference between collocated hosting and dedicated hosting is that in collocated hosting the customer owns the server hardware instead of renting it. In this service the server will be placed in provider’s data center. This service is more expensive than dedicated hosting.

5. Reseller Hosts:

In reseller hosting the providers offers web server storage to their customers, and resells the web server storage to them. Generally providers offer resellers a discount price.

6. Other Hosts:

Including the above type of hosts there are also many other hosts such as email hosts, media hosts, data hosts, etc but these hosts will not be discussed in this article.

Domain Name

Domain name is the name which shows the place where one’s website is located. The actual address of the website is a set of numbers. Each and every web server has its own unique address. Domain name indicates the real addresses of every websites. One can easily remember the domain name of any of the website. Remembering domain name is easier than recalling the IP addresses.

Space / Storage

Space is one of the services provided by the web host. It plays a very important role in the website development. It happens many times that the customer requires more space but the host fails to provide it, so customer should be very careful while choosing the web host. Storage is the amount of web server’s disk space available for customer’s website files, images and databases. Space can be according to the requirement; it can be as small as 5MB in some free hosts and as big as 300GB for some dedicated servers. Earlier prices of the space were very high but prices reduced significantly during the last few years. The hosting plans offering 3GB of space for less than $10 a month can be easily available.

Bandwidth

Bandwidth can be defined as the amount of data transferred from web server to clients’ internet browsers. When ever a person outlook a page the data is transmitted from the server to that person’ PC. If any one is having audio, video and images in his/her website then the bandwidth consumed is more in comparison of the website having only text contents. The bandwidth available in free hosting can be as low as 100MB per month where as in some dedicated servers the bandwidth available is as high as 2000GB a month. The customers who don’t want to pay more for bandwidth can easily find hosting plans offering 75GB of monthly data transfer for less than $10.

Server Type

Generally server means the operating system than runs the web server. Some common types are Windows, Linux and UNIX. Server type refers the server side scripting and database types. The difference between Windows server and Linux/UNIX is that Windows runs ASP and ASP.NET with Access or SQL Server databases where as Linux/UNIX servers usually runs CGI, PHP or JSP with MySQL or Oracle databases. The other difference is that Windows servers are more expensive than Linux/UNIX servers.

Databases

As server type is discussed earlier also, we are able to know that there are different types of databases available. The mostly used is MySQL as it is open source GPL (free) software and can serve a lot of online applications’ requirements such as forums, content management, mailing lists, etc. MySQL, rather its features are limited. MySQL is sufficient for small concern but it is not powerful for the complicated large business sites. Large business requires more powerful databases such as Oracle or SQL Server.

.

Server Side Scripting

Usually the new comers prefer to use PHP as server side scripting. The reason behind this is that there are hundreds of open source (GPL) PHP scripts that are able to fulfill the webmaster’s requirements. However PHP also has some limitations in features required by advanced websites same as in the case of MySQL, due to this limitation some professional web developers prefer to use ASP.NET or JSP. Some other developers still prefer to use Cold Fusion, CGI, ASP or PERL.

Email

Now the next very important aspect to be talked about is Email. At present no one can move further in this computer world with having his/her Email account. The one who is planning to do any kind of activity through computer such as to run a business or to provide any kind of service, then the first thing he/she need to do is to open an Email account. There are many hosting plans that include the feature of having some email accounts with customer’s domain. The availability of number and size of email accounts totally depends on the hosting plan one opted. Generally this feature is not included in free hosting. Small plans provide only about 10 accounts where as big plans do not have the limited number. Usually those email accounts are web based and accessible through POP3 clients as well.

File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

The other service is FTP. File Transfer Protocol is a usual way of transferring files across the Internet. Most of the webmasters used to upload and download their websites contents through FTP. The process of uploading or downloading is performed by using FTP client software. Webmasters require FTP username and password so as to access their web server. There are any hosts who use to provide more than one FTP account to their customers as per their requirement. Rather FTP is unspecified; it is not advisable as per the security reasons.

Control Panel

Control panel is the service available by many of the web hosting companies to their customers. It is a web based application that helps in managing websites. Some important functions performed by the control panel are that it used to manage email accounts, providing statistics, managing FTP accounts, managing domains and sub-domains and managing databases. The control panel application that is mostly used by the user is cPanel. There are many companies who use to develop their own control panel application.

Uptime

Now after having all the services, the thing of concern which remains is how the user keeps his/her website uptime most of the time. If anyone is having a website with excellent features but it remains down most of the time it will be of no use, as when ever the visitors visit his/her website and found it down then later on they will think twice before visiting it. In result he/she will suffer the loss of visitors. Uptime is very important feature of web hosts and that is usually measured in percentage. If a server remains down near about 30 minutes a day will have an uptime percentage of about 99.98%, which is acceptable for most small to medium business websites. If any of the business website is not having at least this percentage of uptime then that website is not suitable for a business website. Mission critical sites cannot tolerate frequent outages, thus they may use web monitoring services to notify web administrators immediately when an outage happens.

Price

Finally the factor left is price. In this option also there is a great variability found like for example customer is having option to choose between the prices ranging from 0 to $1000 per month. For most personal, small and medium websites the total amount of cost involved is just $15 per month. Thus its not at all advisable for business website owners to select very cheap plans let say less than $5 because this price can lead to huge cost indirectly afterwards.

Domain Name Dispute Scam

June 30th, 2009 admin No comments

Scam Alert II: Domain Hijacking

There’s a frightening new batch of scams going around now that can damage your reputation as domain “squatters” steal your domain name.

There are a number of ways the “game” is played. The first is entirely legal, if more than a little questionable. In this version, the name of a city or geographic area is grabbed by a domain squatter and pointed to… “sites that you wouldn’t want your children visiting.”

(We chose that term to avoid getting caught in a lot of spam filters for the use of the word “p-o-rn.”)

A prominent notice is placed on the sites, offering them for sale at prices that range from $2500 to as much as $500,000!

The idea here is that city officials will feel that enough damage is being done to the reputations of their towns that they’ll pay to keep them from being associated with that type of material.

It’s obviously safe to say that it’s not appropriate to pop those kinds of images into people’s faces while they’re looking for info on a completely different topic.

That’s where the pressure on the cities comes from, and why this is such a disgusting scheme.

In essence, the domain squatter says: “Pay us, or continue to watch as your city’s reputation suffers.”

Many would call this blackmail…

The second variation on the theme is not always legal. When someone takes a trademarked name (or variation of the spelling of one) or a famous person’s name, and does the same thing.

For trademarks or close variations, there’s a specific procedure for addressing the problem. (See the resource section at the end of this issue.)

For the names of famous people, there MAY be a remedy. But, it can be tricky — and expensive.

For example, if someone named John Jones registered http://WalterCronkite.com and pointed it to one of “those” sites, Walter Cronkite could probably force the domain away from him.

However, if someone named Steve Cronkite registered http://Cronkite.com and did the same thing, Walter Cronkite would have no recourse. It would be very hard to demonstrate that Steve registered the domain in bad faith. And if Steve’s son’s name is Walter, the same is true for http://WalterCronkite.com.

If you feel that your name is likely to be typed into a browser when people are looking for information on you, you should consider getting both the .com and .net versions of the domain if they’re available.

It will cost you a few bucks to prevent the problem. Fixing it, assuming you win, will cost you hundreds — if not thousands — of dollars.

And there’s no guarantee you’ll win.

~~~
A third version is a bit more benign. It’s common among members of affiliate programs.
In this version names very close to, or even including, the trademark are registered. The sites are created to drive traffic to the affiliates’ URL at the main site.
This may or may not be acceptable to the affiliate program owner. If it is, it’s a good technique for getting traffic. If not, it could get you into hot water. Check with the owner of the trademark before doing this.
Less benign is an alternative version of this technique where someone grabs domain names that are close to the trademark of a competitor and uses them to grab competitor type-in traffic. This is often done by finding out the most common misspellings of the real domain name or trademark.
Watch for people doing this with your domain.
~~~

Here’s the worst version of this — and it can hit anyone if they have enough traffic and don’t pay close attention to when their domain registrations expire.

In this situation, someone grabs expired domain names and points them to “those” kinds of sites. This is a “no lose” for the hijacker, as they will profit from the traffic even if the previous owner doesn’t pay the requested ransom for the domain.

The more traffic the URL gets, the greater the clickthrough value to the hijacker. This means more potential damage to the original owner — and a higher ransom to get it back.

In effect, your own popularity is your worst enemy in this case.

The solution to this one is simple — and very important: Don’t let your domain names expire!

Useful Resources:
If you find yourself a victim of domain hijacking, there is hope for correcting the problem.

For specific information on the UDRP (Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy), the procedure for taking domain names that are being used in violation of a trademark, see

For information on taking action under the Anti-Cybersquatting Act (A US law that provides for damages in addition to the less severe penalties of the UDRP) see

If you have a famous name or trademark, the best defense is to make sure that you register the main variations in both the .com and .net form. The .org is probably only necessary if you are heavily involved with charitable activities.

Protect yourself. Scammers come up with new schemes all the time…

So, keep your eyes open.
